La società fu fondata, con il nome Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, nel 1924 a Herzogenaurach (Germania) da Rudolf Dassler, fratello di Adolf "Adi" Dassler, fondatore della Adidas.
Nel 1948 prese il nome di Puma Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler e divenne società per azioni nel 1986.
